When is termite season in North Carolina?
Termites can remain active all year around, so there is not a specific time of year that homes are less vulnerable. However, termites are often most visible (through signs like droppings, shed wings, and swarming) during the warm and humid months. Typically in North Carolina this means from March until October. While termites will slow down during the colder months, they do not stop reproducing or feeding on wood.
What is the most common type of termite in NC?
The most common species of termite in North Carolina is the “Reticulitermes flavipes” or Eastern Subterranean Termite. The species thrives in a warm and moist environment that is typical of Raleigh and North Carolina. The Reticulitermes Flavipes species of termites also happens to be the most destructive, accounting for 80% of the $2.2 billion a year spent repairing termite damage. It is estimated that 1 in 5 homes in the eastern United States has been, or will be, attacked by the Eastern Subterranean Termite. This is partly because of how rapidly they reproduce; queens have the ability to lay between 5,000 and 10,000 eggs per day to add to an already large colony.
How do termites in NC get into your home?
One of the most common way that termites invite themselves into your home is through a point of wood to ground contact. Steps, decks, wooden posts, door frames are all possible entry point for subterranean termites to access a home. They have also been known to build mud tunnels that extend to an entry point several feet above ground. Termites only need a space of 1/32 of an inch to enter a structure. This is why it is important for older homes with deteriorating foundation to be regularly inspected.
