What is the bug with two black spots on its back?
Do you have a weird looking bug in your yard or while on a walk that you feel like is staring you down with two huge black eyes on its back?? Did it look anything like this? –>
If so we definitely understand why you could feel like you were caught in staring contest! This critter is known as the Eastern Eyed Click Beetle. Aptly named wouldn’t you say? The two black spots on its back are not its actual eyes, but definitely look like two super sized bug eyes when viewed from afar.
In addition to the huge “eyes” on its back, the Eastern Eyed Click Beetle is also known for its ‘click’ sound. It makes this click sound to defend from predators or to flip itself upright when on its back. When the beetle feels threatened it flips over onto its back. When the predator decides to leave it alone, it snaps the two sections of its thorax together. This produces the loud ‘click’ sound it is known for, as well as actually allows it to pop up off of the ground and flip back over onto its feet! Thought it looks kind of weird to many people, this is one fascinating insect!
