Cockroaches are all too often unwanted guests in someone’s home. When you come across one of these pests, your first instinct is probably to step on them. A capable pest removal expert can help you take care of the problem, but did you know that there are many different types of cockroaches that you can find in your home?
American Cockroaches
These cockroaches are perhaps the most common variety, found in many American homes and urban environments. They are known by their scientific name: Periplaneta Americana, and they are particularly large in size. Adults of this species can grow upwards of 55 millimeters in length, and they are reddish brown to dark brown in natural color. They feature yellow bands around the carapace shield located behind their head. Both the males and the females of this species are capable of flight, though only short distances, thanks to their powerful wings. These cockroaches have a natural lifespan of two years and they love to swarm areas where food is stored.
Brown-banded Cockroaches
The brown-banded variety of cockroaches are known as Supella Longipalpa. These are significantly smaller than their American counterparts, as they usually grow upwards of 15 millimeters in size. Both the males and the females of the species have wings, though female cockroaches typically have darker wings. While both have wings, only the male of this species is able to fly, and both males and females can be identified by the two pale yellow bands that are marked across their bodies. These cockroaches only live up to 11 months and they often jump when they are startled.
Oriental Cockroaches
Oriental cockroaches are known as Blatta Orientalis, and they have glossier bodies that are noticeably darker in color than many other species. The females can grow up to 32 millimeters in length, while males may grow up to 25 millimeters. This species is not capable of flight, and they often do not live past the age of six months old. These cockroaches primarily swarm around decaying organic matter, making them a common sight around waste disposal areas.
