Which ants bite?
Not all ants bite, some ants sting. There are other kinds that do neither but have their own kind of defense mechanism. It is important to know which ants have the ability to hurt you and which are not a threat. Field ants, Crazy ants, and carpenter ants are all known to bite when they feel threatened. Ants that react to danger by “stinging” include Fire ants, Acrobat ants and Harvester ants. Fire ant stings can cause swelling and blisters through the injection of chemicals. Fire ant stings are extremely dangerous to those allergic. This is why it is important to contact our Clegg’s team as soon as the insect is spotted on your property.
When are ants active?
Ants tend to be more active at dusk and dawn. This is the best time to inspect your home for invasions. However, they can also be active throughout the day so be sure to keep an eye out for the insect at all times. Ants are cold-blooded insects, meaning they hibernate during the winter. Generally, as soon as temperatures drop below 50 degrees, ants become inactive and are rarely seen around Wilmington–– they must follow the Wrightsville Beach tourists!
How do ants get inside a house?
Ants are small enough to slip through just about any crack in your house. This includes gaps in the foundation, cracks in the flooring, and holes meant to let in utility lines or wiring. However, they can also get inside through other creative entries. Whenever you crack doors and windows to catch that ocean breeze, it creates an easy way for ants to sneak into your home.
